Accelerating Text Analysis with Voyant: The Web-Based Tool You Can Count On

Nowadays, text analysis has become an indispensable tool for extracting valuable insights from unstructured data. In this blog post I will share a free, open-source and useful tool Voyant for text analysis. .

For analyzing textual data in a wide range of contexts like scholarly articles, language teaching this web-based tool plays a pivotal role.

In my earlier blog on “Best Digital Tools for Academic Research: Every Researchers Need to Know” I briefly described the Voyant tool.

With the ever-growing volume of text data, you need reliable and efficient tools to process and analyze data quickly and accurately. This is where Voyant comes in.  It is an open-source web-based free application for conducting text analysis.

Voyant is a user-friendly, powerful and robust application that offers a range of text processing and information extraction features.  To analyze text, it uses Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Machine Learning algorithms.

Besides, the web application extracts valuable insights from the text data. Using Vyont, you can analyze large volumes of text quickly and efficiently.

Vyont is freely available tool to anyone who wants to use it. Since it is an open-source tool, it has a large and active community of developers who are constantly working to improve the tool and add new features.

How to Analyze Text Using Web-Based Voyant Tool

The Voyant allows users to explore and analyze a text corpus in various ways.  You can simply copy and paste the text data into the tool or upload a file for analyzing text data.

Once the text data is uploaded, you can use the various analytical tools available on Voyant to gain insights into the text, such as word frequency, word clouds, and co-occurrence graphs.

In addition to that it also provides a range of visualizations that can help you better understand the patterns and relationships in your text data.

Here is step-by-step guide on how to get started with the tool to conduct text analysis:

Step #1 Open Voyant Tools Website

At the very outset, Open your web browser and go to the URL https://voyant-tools.org/.

Step #2  Create Corpus

Creating a corpus is an important first step in conducting text analysis. A corpus is a collection of texts that is used for linguistic analysis and research.

First of All you need to decide on the type of texts that you want to integrate such as books, social media posts  etc. for developing the corpus.

Once you have identified the texts you want to use, you have to to gather them into a single location and format them consistently.

It may involve various tasks like cleaning and preprocessing the data to remove any unwanted characters or formatting.

Now, click on the “Upload” button to create a new corpus. You can upload files in various formats, including txt, html, and docx.

Besides, you can also add URLs (Uniform Resource Locator)  to the web pages or RSS feeds.

In our case we add the URL https://researcherssite.com/ . To see the corpus, you click  on “Reveal”.

Step #3 Explore Your Corpus

Once you have created the corpus, you can start exploring it using Voyant Tools.

The default skin includes the following tools:

  • Cirrus: This tool generates a word cloud that shows the most frequent words in the corpus.

  • Reader: It displays the text of the corpus. The tool lets you read and navigate through it.
  • Trends: This tool generates a graph that shows the frequency of specific words or phrases over time.
  • Summary: This module provides a summary of the above corpus, including the total number of words, unique words, the most frequent words, and the language of the corpus.
  • Contexts Palette: This tool shows the context in which specific words or phrases appear in the corpus.

Step #4 Embed the Tools

In order to generate the code you click on the “Embed” button.

After generating the source code you copy and paste it into your own website or blog.

The tool lets you customize the width, height, and skin of the embedded tools.

Step #5 Customize the Skin

For customization the skin, click on the “Skins” button to see a list of available skins.

Moreover, you can choose a different skin or create your own custom skin using CSS.

Step #6 Save Your Work

If you want to save your work, click on the “Save” button to download a zip file that contains all of your data and settings.

You can upload this file to continue working on your corpus later.

Once your corpus has been created, you can explore the data using the default tools.

For example, you can use the Cirrus module to generate a word cloud. The tool shows the most frequent words in the text data.

Additionally, you can also use the Reader tool to read and navigate through the text data.

To customize the skin of the web based modules, click on the Skins button to see a list of available skins as I already discussed above.

Using CSS, you can choose a different skin or create your own custom skin.

At the end you can save the work using the Save button. You can also download a ZIP file that contains all of your data and settings.

By using Voyant Tools, you can gain insights into the text file such as the most frequent words (word cloud), the context in which specific words appear, and the frequency of specific words over time.

 Whether you are a researcher, or data analyst, this tool can help you extract insights from textual data more efficiently and accurately.
