How to Generate an Automatic Summary of Research Paper

In this post, I am going to show you how to generate an automatic summary of your research paper using the state-of-the-art online Paper Digest tool.

The internet is a huge hub of information where millions of new scholarly papers are published each year. Keeping up with this information overload can be a challenge.

Due to the exponential growth of academic literature, researchers have to face lot of challenges. Simply, the time academic researchers can spend on their reading is too limited.

In order to solve the matter, the tool automatically generate summaries of your research article using the artificial intelligence. As a result, it reduces your reading time to three minutes.

This AI based academic summarization service allows you to quickly hold the core ideas of a scholarly article without reading the entire paper.

The Paper Digest is a flexible, robust, online AI-powered handy article summarizer tool.

This project is a brainchild of two researchers, Yasutomo and Cristian, both specialized in bibliometrics at the Tokyo Institute of Technology.

Here, I will walk you through the Paper Digest online summarizer. It lets you make quick, informed decisions about your research paper.

In the following blog posts, I already discussed how to access relevant and influential research papers using the various types of literature discovery and mapping tools:

There are different types of academic literature discovery and mapping tools for finding and exploring relevant research papers such as Citation Gecko, Connected Papers, Co-Cites, Local Citation Network, Researchrabbit etc.

Once you receive relevant academic articles as per your topic using these tools, you will still have hundreds of research articles to read.

It is time-consuming process to summarize a research article manually. The AI-powered web app that summarises scientific papers automatically into a important sentences.

This is where Paper Digest enters the picture. Paper Digest is one of the best online summarizing tool.

I have already blogged on how to summarize an academic research article using online summarizing AI-powered tool Scholarcy.

How Paper Digest Works to Generate an Automatic Summary of Research Paper

At the very outset, you input a DOI or PDF url in the search box, and the web app fetches and summarizes the article.

It only works if the research article is open access.

The tool extracts important sentences from across the full-text and generate a single page summary of scholarly article.

The algorithm uses the extraction-based summarization technique to generate the summary report.

Let’s get right to it!

In this section, I will demonstrate how to use the Paper Digest to extract the summary from a scholarly article.

Here is an example of how to summarize scientific article automatically.

Step #1: Open Online Paper Digest Summarizer Tool

First of all you navigate to Paper-Digest site and you will see the web interface below:

Step#2: Insert DOI or PDF URL

Now, you just input a Digital Object Identifier(DOI) or PDF url of your academic article in the search box.

As you know, Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is a standardized alphanumeric code starting with “10…” assigned to most of scholarly papers.

Once you enter the DOI or PDF url , the summarization software retrieve the key sentences from the research paper.

In order to execute the process, it will take ten seconds.

You don’t have to install any software for this work because your web browser will handle everything.

It is worth mentioning that the research paper summarizer only works if the article is open access.

In addition to above, you can also choose a PDF file from your local machine. All you need to do is you just provide the login credentials for accessing the local PDF file.

Only registered user can upload a PDF file to generate the summary of the research article.

In my case, I use the following research paper in PDF format:

“Identifying Non-redundant Gene markers from Micoroarray Data :A Multiobjective Variable Length PSO based Approach”

Step#3: Automatic Generate Summary Report of Research Paper Using Artificial Intelligence

Keep in mind that the article with clear section headers, such as introduction, results, or conclusion would work best.

The extraction-based summarization technique has been applied and it extracts sentences verbatim from the full text.

After processing the above research paper it generates the following summary report:

Summary Report Generated by Paper Digest

This research paper summarizer software uses Artificial Intelligence for generating summary report of your research article.

If you see the report, it generates summary report about your scientific document and what you can learn from this paper.

When you input a DOI the tool verifies firstly for its XML version which ensure higher fidelity to text contents and sections.

If XML is not reachable, then it will retrieve PDF version of the scholarly article.

In this case providing a Digital Object Identifier or PDF URL (Uniform resource Locator) will lead to same results.

Automatically summarizing scholarly article helps researchers in their investigation by expediting the research process.

As I already discussed Paper Digest generates report on open access scientific article.

It looks at the license type, and the full text of the research paper either in XML or PDF format.

The summarizer tool may or may not work properly because each publisher has different conventions in their file format.

In October 2018, Paper Digest received the Catalyst Grant by Digital Science.

Paper Digest was awarded a People’s Choice Award during the Previews Session, New and Noteworthy Product Presentations of the Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) 41st Annual Meeting held on May 29-31, 2019, in San Diego, CA.
